When your Petunias start getting long and leggy, the plant has to work so much harder so if you want to help them last longer then it’s a very good idea to give them a prune now. It’s the beginning of August and Petunias will by now have started trailing down, and whilst that looks beautiful, if you look closely you will see that they have turned into really long leggy stems which are having to support what is often only one or two small flowers right at the tips. So it’s a lot of work for Petunias to continue having to sustain this for at least another two months. The way I try and help my Petunias is by giving them a summer prune. Here you will see I cut all the trailing Petunias up level with the top of the planter, then make sure I have removed all the flower’s seed pods, to stop the plant forming seeds and thinking that its flowering job is over. I also reduce alternate remaining stems by about 20% and that way I still have some flowers now, but in a few weeks’ time new growth will have appeared, and also new flowers. In this video I prune the Petunias on two rectangle planters, my Grecian-style planter and my two hanging baskets. I hope you find this video as I show you the method I use. • If you’d like to join my Facebook page, also called The Enthusiastic Gardener, you can find it by clicking this link: •   / the-enthusiastic-gardener-104622541169305   • Have fun in your gardens! • Janette, The Enthusiastic Gardener
